Solar for Schools: Preparing a Practical Project Brief

Solar for Schools: Preparing a Practical Project Brief

A school’s energy profile may change between class hours, examinations, holidays and seasonal weather. A useful project brief explains these variations and the building areas included in the proposal.

Map educational and building needs

Collect bills and describe classrooms, offices, computer rooms, pumps and other major loads. Identify essential services and the hours they are needed. Holiday periods matter because the school may be using less electricity while the array continues generating.

Plan around people and access

Installation scheduling should account for students, staff, roof access and material movement. Ask for equipment areas and monitoring access to be clearly defined. The school should nominate staff responsible for keeping operating instructions, service records and support contacts available after handover.

Include the school calendar

Classroom cooling, computer rooms, pumps and administration loads can follow different schedules. Provide term dates, holiday occupancy and any evening activities so the energy assessment reflects the real year. For procurement, ask for a named person responsible for operating instructions and service records. A school’s installed panel capacity alone cannot explain its energy use or establish the commercial terms available to another property.

Your practical checklist

  • Provide term and holiday schedules
  • Identify priority services separately
  • Agree access and handover responsibilities

Should a school use the same consumption assumptions during holidays?

No. Reduced occupancy can change daytime use and the amount of generation used on site.
