A useful solar return calculation states its assumptions before presenting a payback period. The purchase price is only one input: direct consumption, export arrangements, maintenance and future replacements also affect the result.
Use a transparent formula
Simple payback equals the installed cost divided by the estimated annual net saving. As a purely illustrative example, PKR 1,200,000 divided by PKR 240,000 gives five years. These are teaching figures, not Sunlight prices or a promised return. They exclude financing, discounting and changes over time.
Separate the sources of value
Electricity used directly may avoid a different cost from the value assigned to exported electricity. Use the tariff and agreement that actually apply to the account. Subtract recurring costs and do not count the same stored unit as both an export and a later saving. Battery energy losses also matter.
Test a less favourable outcome
Calculate a second case with lower generation, reduced direct consumption or higher maintenance. Consider equipment replacement and the cost of finance. A discounted cash-flow assessment can address the timing of costs and benefits more fully than simple payback. Request the spreadsheet inputs so your proposal can be checked and updated.
Your practical checklist
- Request the calculation assumptions
- Separate direct use from exports
- Test a conservative case
What should I confirm before proceeding?
Confirm prices, tariffs, operating costs and site-specific generation estimates before relying on a forecast.
