Choosing an installer starts with matching the company name on its proposal to the records that support its work. Engineering licensing, incorporation, tax registration and installer certification serve different purposes and should be checked separately.
Check the engineering and company records
Ask for the legal business name, incorporation record and a current PEC licence relevant to the proposed work. Sunlight publishes PEC licence 98072, category C6, with a displayed validity of 30 June 2027, alongside its SECP incorporation certificate. Review the document scope instead of treating a logo as sufficient evidence.
Check installer certification where required
PPIB publishes certified-installer information under the AEDB certification framework. Confirm the named legal entity, category, applicable area and current validity for work requiring that credential. A PEC licence, an SECP certificate and a PPIB installer certificate are distinct records; one should not be presented as proof of the others.
Connect credentials to the contract
Make sure the quoted equipment, installation responsibilities, warranty process and payment milestones are written clearly. Ask for relevant project examples and contactable support. Registration is useful evidence of identity and scope, but it does not replace a site assessment or guarantee the outcome of an individual project.
Your practical checklist
- Match the legal entity across documents
- Check scope and expiry dates
- Retain the written proposal
What should I confirm before proceeding?
Ask which credentials apply to your installation and request current copies.
