Battery Capacity: Nominal Energy Versus Usable Energy

Battery Capacity: Nominal Energy Versus Usable Energy

Battery quotations often highlight a capacity figure without explaining how it relates to energy available to the customer. Distinguishing nominal and usable energy helps make a backup discussion more meaningful.

Read the capacity description

Nominal energy describes a rated quantity. The energy available in operation depends on the permitted operating range, equipment settings and other system characteristics. Ask whether a proposal’s figure refers to one battery, the complete bank or an estimated amount delivered to loads.

Connect capacity to actual loads

Backup duration depends on what is running as well as the battery and inverter limits. A modest load used for a longer period may need different planning from a high load used briefly. Request an estimate with a stated appliance list and assumptions rather than a universal number of backup hours.

Estimate energy before discussing runtime

Illustrative example: a battery storing 5 kWh nominally, with 80% assumed usable for this illustration, provides 4 kWh before further conversion losses or reserve settings. A steady 1 kW load would therefore not justify a promise of five hours from that label alone. Ask for the model-specific usable energy, allowable output and design assumptions. Actual runtime also changes with appliance behaviour and battery condition.

Your practical checklist

  • Identify nominal and usable figures
  • List the loads used in duration estimates
  • Ask which settings affect available reserve

Can kWh tell me how much power the battery can supply at once?

No. Energy capacity and discharge power are separate limits; both must suit the intended loads.
