An existing solar installation does not automatically support a straightforward battery addition. Before buying storage, review the installed inverter, wiring, monitoring and intended backup requirement with a qualified installer.
Start with an equipment inventory
Collect invoices, model numbers, manuals and commissioning records. Describe what you want to change: evening energy use, selected outage backup or another goal. The installer can then assess which existing components can be retained and what additional equipment or changes are needed.
Ask for a complete upgrade scope
The proposal should include compatibility checks, any circuit changes, installation work and updated handover documents. Confirm whether warranties on existing equipment are affected. If the battery addition changes system behaviour during outages, ask for that behaviour to be explained and demonstrated.
Treat storage as a system modification
Start with the existing inverter model, array details, wiring records and any available monitoring history. Ask whether the proposed storage is supported directly or requires a different integration method. Include the supported backup circuits and the effect on existing warranties in the scope. A battery addition can require changes beyond buying the battery itself, so compare complete installed proposals rather than a standalone storage price.
