A 10kW system is not automatically the better purchase, and a 5kW system is not automatically enough for a smaller home. Compare the roof, demand profile and project objective before choosing the size printed on a package.
Understand what the size refers to
A quote may use kilowatts for the panel array or the inverter, and the two ratings need not be identical. Ask for both. Battery energy is measured separately in kilowatt-hours. Neither a 5kW nor a 10kW label establishes daily generation, backup duration or permission to export a particular quantity.
Compare the physical and operating needs
A larger array requires a suitable layout and can produce more energy under comparable conditions, but excess generation may have a different value from electricity consumed directly. Review shade, roof access and daytime demand. If backup is the priority, compare the inverter’s supported output and usable battery energy rather than simply doubling panels.
Request two complete scenarios
Ask the designer to show an appropriately sized smaller option and a larger option using consistent assumptions. Compare installed cost, direct consumption, expected exports and any storage. Include future loads only when there is a credible plan for them. Sunlight can discuss these scenarios using your bills and site information rather than assigning a package from the monthly bill alone.
Your practical checklist
- Identify array and inverter ratings
- Compare usable roof space and daytime demand
- Evaluate full costs for both options
What should I confirm before proceeding?
Confirm a site-specific design and clearly stated energy and backup assumptions before choosing either size.
