Panel efficiency describes conversion performance, while panel wattage describes rated output. For a customer with a small roof, the relationship between panel area and capacity can be useful. For a larger roof, other project priorities may carry more weight.
Compare like with like
Review the dimensions, rated power and efficiency of the exact models being offered. A higher-wattage panel may also be physically larger. The practical question is how much suitable capacity fits within the usable layout while preserving access and respecting the mounting design.
Consider the complete installation
Panel efficiency does not describe inverter performance, shading, dirt or every other factor affecting delivered energy. Ask for a site-based generation estimate and an explanation of the assumptions. An apparently stronger panel specification does not automatically make the whole project the better fit.
Use roof area as well as watts in the comparison
Illustrative example: a 500 W module occupying 2.5 square metres provides 200 W of rated capacity per square metre of module area. Compare this with another exact model, then allow for the real layout and access space. A higher wattage panel may also be larger, so wattage alone does not show which option fits a constrained roof best. Ask for both module count and a dimensioned drawing.
Your practical checklist
- Compare exact panel models and dimensions
- Use the approved layout when comparing capacity
- Review whole-system generation assumptions
Does higher module efficiency guarantee more useful energy at my property?
It can help where space is limited, but shading, layout, orientation and consumption timing still affect the result.
