Planning solar before a new home is complete creates an opportunity to coordinate the roof, electrical services and equipment locations. The aim is to leave usable space and sensible access without committing to equipment before household requirements are understood.

Coordinate with the building team

Discuss roof loading, waterproofing, cable routes and maintenance access with the relevant professionals. Water tanks, stair structures and future extensions can compete with panels for space. Reserve equipment locations that follow manufacturer requirements and remain accessible after cupboards, landscaping or other fixtures are installed.

Allow for the way the home will be used

Prepare an expected appliance list and revisit it when the home is occupied. A preliminary design should distinguish assumptions from confirmed requirements. If battery storage may be added later, ask which parts of the proposed installation would support that change and which would need replacement.

Reserve the spaces that are hard to change later

A new house may have an open roof today but later need a water tank, stair enclosure and outdoor cooling equipment. Mark these on the same drawing as the proposed panels before construction closes cable routes. Ask the building team to identify the proposed inverter wall and access route. Keep future battery provision separate from a promise that any battery will fit; model compatibility still needs confirmation when equipment is selected.

Your practical checklist

  • Share architectural and electrical drawings
  • Record likely daytime and evening loads
  • Keep roof access and future construction plans visible in the design

Should I buy panels before the house is occupied?

Plan early, but verify expected loads and the final design before ordering. Construction changes can alter usable roof space.
