Rooftop solar can supply part of a property’s electricity demand, but a building-level installation should not be described as a solution to every grid interruption. Separate the energy contribution from the continuity of supply needed by the occupants or business.
Identify the actual operational problem
Record whether the priority is reducing purchased daytime energy, keeping selected loads running during outages or both. A business losing access to billing equipment has a different continuity need from a facility supporting machinery. The proposal should describe the problem before selecting equipment.
Understand the limits of ordinary grid-connected solar
A conventional grid-following inverter normally stops supplying power during a grid outage. Backup requires a compatible design with suitable isolation and controls. Ask which circuits are supported, for how long under the assessed load, and what happens when stored energy reaches its configured reserve.
Plan for demand and supply timing
Solar generation varies with conditions and is unavailable after sunset without another source of energy. Review the daily load profile and the role of storage or existing supplies. A proposal should state its assumptions rather than promise independence from every future tariff change or interruption.
Before your next discussion
- Record affected loads and outage priorities
- Confirm the intended backup arrangement
- Review the operating limits in writing
Does installing panels mean the property will always have power?
No. Supply depends on the complete system, available energy and the supported loads.
