Planning Guide

Grid connection and export rules can change, while a solar installation may operate for many years. A sound proposal separates the equipment’s physical capabilities from the commercial arrangements that determine how electricity is billed or credited.

Identify the arrangement that applies to your account

Ask the relevant electricity provider for the current requirements and terms for the proposed project. Keep the applicable documents with your assessment. Do not assume that an older article, another customer’s agreement or an industry discussion determines the terms available to your property.

Assess the value of energy used at the property

Separate direct consumption, stored energy and any permitted export in the financial assessment. Ask for a comparison that changes the surplus-energy assumption so you can see how much the outcome depends on it. Storage should have a defined role and should not be treated as an automatic answer to every policy uncertainty.

Retain the actual agreement and application record

Record who handles documents, fees and communications, and which decisions remain with the provider. Existing equipment does not establish that an agreement will transfer or retain every term after a modification. Obtain specific confirmation before relying on that assumption.

Before your next discussion

Are existing systems always protected from later changes?

Do not assume that. The actual agreement and applicable rules need to be checked for the specific situation.
