Battery and Backup

Understanding Battery Cycle Life in a Solar Proposal

Battery cycle-life figures can be difficult to compare without their test conditions. The number printed in a brochure does not by itself explain how long a battery will serve a particular customer.

Read the conditions behind the figure

Ask about the depth of discharge, temperature and remaining-capacity criteria used for the published rating. Daily operation may differ from those test conditions. Also review calendar-related warranty limits and any other terms rather than converting a cycle figure directly into a guaranteed number of years.

Discuss the expected operating pattern

A system used heavily every evening may have a different duty pattern from one held mainly for occasional backup. Ask how the intended settings relate to the manufacturer’s guidance and warranty. Keep written terms and avoid treating an informal sales estimate as a replacement for them.

Compare cycle figures under the same conditions

A stated cycle count is meaningful only with its associated depth of discharge, temperature, test method and retained-capacity threshold. A battery used partly each day is not necessarily consuming one complete rated cycle on every calendar day. Review the warranty’s calendar and throughput limits as well as the headline number. Use model documents to compare options rather than translating cycles directly into a guaranteed number of years.

Your practical checklist

  • Compare ratings under stated conditions
  • Review both time and usage warranty limits
  • Explain whether the priority is daily cycling or reserve backup

Does a cycle-life claim guarantee a specific service life?

No. Warranty terms and operating conditions determine what is promised and how a claim is assessed.
