How to Compare Solar Inverter Proposals

The inverter is central to how the solar installation supplies usable electricity and, where applicable, manages batteries and backup. A comparison should begin with the required functions and the exact model offered.

Define the operating requirements

Tell the installer whether the project needs grid-connected generation, battery storage, selected backup loads or another arrangement. Check that the proposed model supports the intended use. Two inverters with similar advertised capacity may differ in connections, battery compatibility and backup capabilities.

Read the supporting documents

Ask for the manufacturer datasheet, monitoring options and relevant warranty terms. The installer should explain how the array and any battery fit within the unit’s limits. Also confirm the proposed location, access and environmental requirements rather than assuming any wall space is suitable.

Compare supported functions rather than the brand label

Create a comparison with the exact inverter model, AC output, PV input limits, battery support, monitoring and intended outage behaviour. A proposal can have ample panel wattage while lacking the backup function you expected. Ask the installer to describe how the selected model serves your loads in daylight, at night and during an outage. Any electrical compatibility assessment belongs with the qualified design team.

Your practical checklist

  • Compare full inverter model designations
  • Document required backup and battery functions
  • Confirm placement, monitoring and warranty arrangements

Are two inverters with the same kW rating interchangeable?

No. Input limits, phases, supported batteries and operating functions can differ between models.
