Solar Planning for Homes with Air Conditioning

Solar Planning for Homes with Air Conditioning

Air conditioning can be an important part of household electricity use, but counting the number of units alone is not enough for system planning. Different rooms, schedules and equipment settings produce different consumption patterns.

Describe how cooling is used

List the air-conditioner models where possible, the rooms served and typical operating hours. Distinguish daytime cooling from evening use. Tell the installer which units might run together and which, if any, need to remain available during a power outage.

Ask for a realistic operating scenario

A solar proposal should explain the assumptions used to assess cooling loads. Avoid relying on a general claim that a certain system size can run a fixed number of air conditioners. Actual suitability depends on equipment demand, other simultaneous loads, available generation and any backup arrangement.

Record when cooling runs and how it varies

Avoid selecting capacity solely from the number of air conditioners. Note the actual models, rooms in use, thermostat habits and operating hours. Variable-speed equipment does not draw its maximum label power continuously, while multiple units may still create high simultaneous demand. Ask the designer to assess daytime generation separately from overnight or outage cooling. A measured load profile gives a stronger basis than a package advertised for a certain number of rooms.

Your practical checklist

  • Record models and operating schedules
  • Identify simultaneous cooling loads
  • Ask which assumptions underpin the proposed capacity

Can a panel count prove that all air conditioners will run during an outage?

No. The inverter, battery, circuits and appliance behaviour must support the intended simultaneous load.
