Customers sometimes expect a grid-connected solar installation to keep supplying their home whenever sunlight is available. Whether that is possible during an outage depends on the complete system design, not simply on having panels on the roof.

Ask about outage behaviour explicitly

A conventional grid-connected system is generally designed to stop supplying the grid when the grid is unavailable. Backup operation requires equipment and circuit arrangements intended for that purpose. Ask the installer to describe what happens to your proposed installation when the utility supply fails.

Define the backup project separately

If backup is important, identify the required loads and duration before equipment is selected. The proposal should explain any battery, switching and essential-circuit provisions. Avoid accepting a general statement such as “solar works in daytime” as a description of outage performance.

Separate normal generation from outage supply

A conventional grid-following installation relies on an available utility grid and normally shuts down during a grid outage. This is a protection function, not evidence that the panels have failed. Backup requires a suitable equipment and circuit arrangement with the necessary isolation and controls. Ask for a written explanation of which loads, if any, remain supplied during an outage; the presence of sunshine alone does not establish backup capability.

Your practical checklist

  • Request a written outage-operation explanation
  • Identify which circuits need backup
  • Check the complete design rather than the inverter label alone

Will adding panels alone solve outage backup?

No. The complete backup arrangement must be designed for the site and the selected equipment.
