Solar maintenance should preserve safe operation, reliable records and usable monitoring. The appropriate routine depends on the equipment, environment and access conditions. Treat cleaning and technical inspection as different tasks rather than assuming that washing panels completes the service.

Follow the equipment guidance

Ask the service provider to use the panel manufacturer’s cleaning instructions and to assess safe access. Dust, nearby construction and seasonal conditions can change the routine. Avoid a fixed nationwide cleaning interval; observations and system records provide a better basis for reviewing the schedule.

Recognise what needs professional attention

Record damaged equipment, unexplained alerts or a persistent output change and contact the provider. Do not open enclosures, handle connectors or climb onto an unsafe roof to investigate. An ordinary visual observation from existing safe access is different from an electrical or structural inspection.

Keep useful maintenance evidence

For each visit, retain the date, reported issue, work completed and equipment affected. Compare generation only over appropriate periods with weather and missing data considered. A cloudy day or an offline app does not establish a dirty panel or an equipment failure. Ask the provider to explain any unresolved finding and the next step.

Before your next discussion

How often should solar panels be cleaned?

Use manufacturer guidance and the site conditions to agree a routine with the provider. There is no universal interval for every installation.
